If you're planning on buying a property, you will need to get the title deed (or deed of transfer) transferred into your name to prove that you own the property. You need the assistance of a conveyancing attorney (attorney specialising in property transfers) to help you transfer the title deed into your name.
Once the Registrar of Deeds signs the transfer then you legally own the property. After registration, a copy of the title deed (or deed of transfer) is kept at the Deeds Office closest to the property. For instance, if the property is in Welkom, then the Bloemfontein Deeds Office will keep a copy, if the property is in Durban, then the Pietermaritzburg Deeds Office will keep a copy.
Traditionally you had to go the Deeds Office in question to get a copy. These days there are several ways of getting the document without going to the Deeds Office. Usually this allows some legwork and registering for an account with the providers.
We made it easier by providing Deeds Office information on a per-request basis. No need to register for an account or pay and sign-up fees. You can order a search directly from our website, pay with a bank transfer (EFT) or credit card and we will deliver it straight to your inbox.
